Are you busy? Stressed? Burned out? Do you need a break?
The good news is you can learn to manage stress AND you can start exactly where you are. Here are 3 ways to calm the nervous system as you go about your day. Calm the brain and body so you can cultivate focus, connection, stress resilience, enabling you to handle the ups and downs with greater effectiveness.
Manage Stress in Everyday Activities
1. Waiting (in a long line or for a meeting to start): Feel your feet on the floor, the breath moving in and out of the body. Quietly, in your mind, send good wishes to someone around you. “May you be healthy and safe.”
2. Walking (in a store, at work, quickly, slowly): Feel your feet touching the ground as you walk. Lift a foot, move it forward, place it down. Feel the weight of the body shifting from foot to foot, the movement of the body in space, perhaps coordinating breath with movement.
3. Talking (with a friend, a family member, a colleague): Give the gift of listening fully, with heart and mind. Notice when your attention wanders and bring it back to the person(s), as if you’re hearing what they have to say for the first time. Ask questions if unclear. If triggered or angered, take a few cycles of breath in and out before responding.
Try it! You don’t need any special gadgets or a lot of time. You can integrate mindfulness in the midst of your day. Take opportunities to pause, even as you’re moving!
OR take a minute to pause (yes, just one minute!) with this video.
